Montrose - Mont-rosé?

YOU’ve heard of painting the town red - now you can have Montrose red, white or rosé!

Former Academy pupil Graeme Hetherington knew there were three French wines with Montrose in their names, but it was only last year while on holiday in the Languedoc that he had the chance to visit one.

He said: “I was sitting in a café in the high street of the town of Pezenas enjoying a glass of the local rosé when I saw a sign for Domaine Montrose. I summoned up my best Academy schoolboy French and spoke to the waiter who told me the vineyard was only four kilometres outside town.”

“The next day I went to visit the owner’s son Olivier Coste who showed me round the vineyard and let me sample a few of the offerings. The wines were great value and even with shipping costs, duty and VAT thought it was well worthwhile to get them readily available for the people of Montrose for drinking.”

So Graeme set up Angus Wines Limited, a company privately supplying wines with an Angus theme directly to businesses and homes.

He is promoting four main wines by Domaine Montrose: the red is a Cabernet Syrah; the rosé is a Silver-Medal winner and scored 82 points in a ‘decanter’ rating; two whites an easy-drinking Viognier and a classic un-oaked Chardonnay. The Chardonnay is the house-white under their own label at the Royal and Ancient Golf club in St Andrews. All the wines are typical of the region where long sunny growing seasons imbue the wine with a great richness.

Prices for the whole range are £78 a case including VAT.

Angus Wines’ first big local customer is Montrose Football Club who will be using the wines at their hospitality events.

The other more celebrated Bordeaux versions of the Montrose wines, ‘Chateau Montrose’ and ‘La Dame de Montrose’ are also available. Prices vary subject to the vintage and quantities.
